Just something about Niamh and her shiny new West End role! It's very biased.
Belfast Telegraph My, my, it's our Niamh starring in Mamma Mia
STAGE starlet Niamh Perry has landed the West End’s most coveted lead role after being cast to star in the box office smash hit Mamma Mia.
The Northern Irish actress — who rose to fame singing on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s prime time BBC show ‘I’d Do Anything’ — is already several weeks into rehearsals for the key role of Sophie Sheridan in the world’s number one stage show.
The record-breaking show, which features a musical score of some of Abba’s most famous hits and has been seen by more than 30m people worldwide, has confounded critics with its popularity and has made the 18-year-old star the envy of female performers throughout the stage world.
One show insider confirmed that some of the big names in the West End went for the part of Sophie and many eyebrows were raised when news filtered through that Niamh landed the part.
One source close to the young actress said: “It is true to say that some people were a little astounded to discover that the role went to Niamh, who is relatively inexperienced.
“There were certainly other actresses who went for the role with far more stage experience so there are definitely a few bruised egos and ruffled feathers amongst a raft of smarting actresses out there.
“However the simple fact is that Niamh is an incredibly hard-working young actress with an amazing talent and she prepared very well and worked very hard for her audition.
“Her determination has paid off and now she is putting her all into the rehearsal process and plans to give the performances of her life so far when the show opens to the public.”
Niamh’s latest success has also pleased Andrew Lloyd Webber, who said: “I am delighted. It is a very proud moment indeed.”
Mamma Mia — which currently has more productions running than any other musical in the world — is at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the West End, where Niamh will take over the role of Sophie once her rehearsals are complete.
I won't say the bit about raised eyebrows and ruffled feathers doesn't make me nervous .
